UM SPH Public Health Practice Summit

 

ABOUT THE SUMMIT
The Office of Public Health Practice has held an Academic-Practice Summit to explore linkages between Governmental Public Health and Academia since 2006. Summit events include a welcome by the Dean of the School of Public Health and a keynote address by a leader in the field of public health. Summit sessions highlight new SPH initiatives and focus on academic-practice collaborations. Invitees include SPH faculty and students, Health Officers and Medical Directors from all 45 local health departments in Michigan, designated leadership of the Michigan Department of Community Health, and other public health practice partners.


The fourth Public Health Practice Summit was held on Monday, September 17, 2012 at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Dr. Anthony Iton
Sr. Vice President, Healthy Communities,
The California Endowment
   

Anthony Iton, MD, JD, MPH, is Senior Vice President for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation whose mission is to expand access to affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians. Dr. Iton’s primary interest is the health of disadvantaged populations and the contributions of race, class, wealth, education, geography, and employment to health status. In this presentation, Dr. Iton:

  • Describes the impact of health inequity.
  • Provides a framework for public health practice.
  • Offers concrete examples of public health solutions around issues of health disparities and chronic disease.

TED-Style Talks:

At the 2012 Invitational Leadership Summit, two University of Michigan faculty each gave a 15-20 minute talk about new approaches, frameworks, and considerations for public health practice around the issue of health equity.

Dr. Michael Spencer, from the School of Social Work, spoke about the role of identity in a practitioner or researcher's work.

Dr. Shobita Parthasarathy, from the Ford School of Public Policy, provided an example of successful policy advocacy in the public health field.
