Community-Based Public Health (CBPH)

Mission Statement

Community-based public health (CBPH) at the University of Michigan School of Public Health (UM SPH) promotes community-based approaches to prevent disease, promote health,  and eliminate health disparities through research and teaching activities based on mutually beneficial partnerships between community-based organizations, public health and human service agencies, and the SPH.

CBPH has the following aims and goals:

    1. Foster the development and maintenance of new and existing partnerships to improve community public health through: research, such as community-based participatory research (CBPR); teaching, such as the education of public health and other students; and life-long learning activities for professionals at public health and human service agencies, community-based organizations and other institutions.
    2. Initiate, coordinate, and support faculty and student engagement in CBPH-related scholarship and learning activities, for example, through community-service learning opportunities in courses and internships.
    3. Design, implement and evaluate programs that foster the mission of CBPH, such as, programs to encourage students to pursue careers in public health, and programs that enhance the use of technology and linkages between the SPH and community and public health partners.
    4. Engage in partnership activities that support and assist in the dissemination and translation of research conducted by SPH faculty and CBPR projects affiliated with the SPH, such as translating research findings into policy change.
    5. Promote CBPH/CBPR through policy-related strategies such as educating and encouraging funders to support CBPH/CBPR and acknowledging and fostering community/university partnerships.
    6. Provide ongoing communication to community, academic and practice partners regarding CBPH activities.
