Building the Practice of Public Health

The University of Michigan School of Public Health Office of Public Health Practice extends the university's resources to public health practitioners in governmental and community-based organizations and provides practice opportunities for UM SPH students and faculty. Programs housed in the Practice Office demonstrate UM SPH's commitment to securing and strengthening Michigan's current and future public health practice community through applied research, education and lifelong learning.

The Office of Public Health Practice establishes new national Center of Excellence for Public Health Workforce Studies

The Practice Office recently received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a national Center of Excellence for Public Health Workforce Studies. The Center will focus on research related to public health workforce capacity and developing models to forecast workforce shortages.

 

Incoming Public Health Students:

The Practice Office, with support from Michigan Public Health Training Center, Michigan Center for Public Health Preparedness and Community-Based Public Health offices, placed 22 students in internships throughout Michigan and one in San Diego. These students along with their preceptors attended the internship poster session for HBHE, EHS and EPID on Friday, October 9, 2009. China Scholars from the Tianjin Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Drs. Hongliang Liu, Wenlong Zheng, Ying Du, and Lin Li completed a three-month training rotation in the UMSPH Practice Office as part of the China Scholar Exchange Program. On November 20, 2009 the four China scholars flew back to Tianjin with fond memories that have enriched both their professional and personal lives.

Hongliang Liu, MD is Professor and Vice-Director of Tianjin Institute of Preventive Medicine, Director of Tianjin Institute for Environmental Health, and Deputy Director of the Tianjin CDC. His research focuses on environmental health issues, and he has actively provided medical assistance for victims of natural and biological disasters in China.

Wenlong Zheng, MD, is a Medical Epidemiologist and project supervisor in the Institute of Non-Communicable Disease Control and Prevention at Tianjin CDC. His research interests include chronic disease surveillance, program evaluation and interventions in communities particularly in tobacco control.

Du Ying, MD works in Human Resources at the Tianjin CDC. Her interests include human resource management, health management and policy, and evaluation of employee training programs and their impact on public health service delivery.

Li Lin, MD, is a Medical Epidemiologist at Tianjin CDC. Her work focuses on respiratory diseases, influenza surveillance, and communicable disease outbreak investigation and control.

UM SPH's Matthew Boulton was recently presented with an award by the Chinese government for initiating the highly successful China Scholar Exchange Program between UM SPH and the Tianjin Centers for Disease Control and for his work in assisting China with infectious disease control efforts.
