Principal Investigator: Matthew L. Boulton, MD, MPH, is Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and is Associate Dean for Practice, focusing his efforts on developing a comprehensive strategy for the School of Public Health to improve the public health workforce, establish the Academic Health department model, and enhance applied research. In addition to his role with the Michigan Center for Public Health Preparedness, he is Director of both the Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency in the School of Public Health and the university-wide Bioterrorism Preparedness Initiative, which aims to coordinate training and research activities in this area across the entire campus. In this role, he also provides oversight and guidance to the Michigan Public Health Training Center. He is the former Chief Medical Executive and State Epidemiologist for the Michigan Department of Community Health where he served as the lead scientist/epidemiologist from 1998-2004 and was responsible for all communicable disease control and surveillance, immunizations, vital records and health statistics, and environmental exposure monitoring for acute and chronic human health effects. His current research is focused on applied epidemiology field investigations, maternal child health, building national epidemiology capacity and improving the public health workforce.
Director: JoLynn P. Montgomery, MPH, PhD, is Research Investigator in the University of Michigan School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. Her primary focus is on applied epidemiology and public health practice with specialization in control of communicable diseases, disease surveillance systems, and public health emergency preparedness and response. She is a former communicable disease epidemiologist with the Michigan Department of Community Health. Dr. Montgomery has served as faculty for several MI-CPHP courses, including Bioterrorism Planning and Response: Epidemiology for Non-Epidemiologists, Epidemiologic Methods for Emergency Response, Field Surveillance for Disasters and Public Health Response at International Ports of Entry.
Evaluation Director: Thomas Reischl, PhD, is Associate Research Scientist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where he also directs evaluation activities for the Prevention Research Center. Dr. Reischl was previously on the faculty in the Psychology Department at Michigan State University (1987-1998) and at the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire (1998-2000).
Staff
Program Manager: Angela Beck, MPH, CHES, provides program management for MI-CPHP activities. Her MPH degree is in Health Behavior and Health Education.
Public Health Liaison: Erin Rothney, MPH, works closely with state and local public health departments on issues of public health workforce development and assessment. Her MPH degree is in Health Behavior and Health Education.
Project Coordinator: Amy Sarigiannis, MPH, plans and coordinates MI-CPHP on-site courses. She also supports MI-CPHP in evaluating courses and developing surveys and assessments. Her MPH is in Environmental Health Sciences.
Internship and PHAST Coordinator: Dana Thomas, MPH, plans and coordinates student public health practice experiences for the Michigan Center for Public Health Preparedness and the UM SPH Office of Public Health Practice. She coordinates the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST), and the Practice Internship Program, which places students in practice opportunities and mentors them during their internship. Ms. Thomas holds an MPH in Health Behavior and Health Education.
Continuing Education Coordinator: Judy Compton, MAT, MS, supports project development and course registration for MI-CPHP.
Project Secretary: Holly Szafarek, provides administrative and marketing support for MI-CPHP.
