Multivariate Analysis

Definition: Multivariate analysis explores the association between one outcome variable (referred to as the dependent variable) and one or more predictor variables (referred to as independent variables). Multivariate techniques concern the statistical analysis of relationships among a set of variables, particularly when at least three variables are involved. Regression analysis one example of a multivariable technique.

Regression analysis is a statistical tool for evaluating the relationship of one or more predictor variables to a single outcome variable.  The outcome variable can be continuous (height, weight, or blood pressure) or dichotomous (presence or absence of disease).  When dichotomous variables are used as the outcome, it is called logistic regression.

It is important to be cautious about the results obtained from multivariate analysis or any other analysis seeking to quantify an association.  Association does not imply causality.  Just because two things are associated does not mean that one causes the other.
