PSYCHOSOCIAL ISSUES RELATED TO BIOTERRORISM FOR NURSES

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe a model for recognizing and intervening with the psychosocial issues related to terrorism.

  2. Describe the principles of traumatic incident stress management.

  3. Practice appropriate traumatic incident stress management strategies health care professionals can use to intervene with individuals, children, families, and communities around terrorist events.

  4. Identify factors that make individuals, children, families, and communities at high risk for psychosocial difficulties before, during, and after terrorist events.

  5. Identify indicators, signs, and symptoms of normal stress responses, Acute Stress Reaction, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, fear, and grief associated with a terrorist event.

  6. Discuss issues regarding debriefing for health care professionals and other emergency responders.
